In 1985, following completion of his pediatric training at UNC Hospitals and Duke University Medical Center, Hugh Craft, wife Reggie and daughters Anna and Claire moved to Roanoke where he joined neonatologists, Drs Wells, Allen and Krell at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. In 1988, son Will arrived, born several months early and spent a month in the NICU cared for by his neonatal partners. In 1990 he became medical director of the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital when the pediatric services at Roanoke Memorial and Community Hospital were consolidated there. In 2004 he left that position and joined Carilion Pediatric Associates, Postal Drive as a general pediatrician where he continues to practice today. He has served on the boards of Easter Seals, the Ronald McDonald House, his church and was chair of the Eagle Scout Board for Review for the Blue Ridge Mountains Council. He has been active in the American Academy of Pediatrics including serving as Virginia Chapter President. Dr Craft has particular interest in caring for children with special health care needs, having cared for many such children during his time working in the NICU and PICU. He is a faculty member at the Virginia Tech/Carilion School of Medicine where he precepts students in medical ethics and the history of medicine and is a member of the ethics committee at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. In his free time, he enjoys time with his family, lab Lily, friends and spends as much time outdoors as possible.
