OUR PARTNER

Nourish Network

At The Nourish Network, we are committed to fostering healthier communities by promoting lactation as a vital tool in supporting a healthy childhood. With the support of an $88,950 grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY), we have launched a three-year initiative aimed at encouraging lactation among expectant and new parents in the Greater Roanoke Valley.

This initiative brings together a diverse group of local partners—including CHIP of Roanoke Valley, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Roanoke College’s Center for Community Health Innovation, BREASTRoanoke, Mandy Irby–The Birth Nurse, and Physicians to Children—who are united in their mission to support trauma-informed lactation education. Together, we aim to provide education, resources, and support that empower families to make informed, healthy decisions.

We offer lactation education both in the home visiting and clinical setting, trauma-informed lactation trainings, free policies supporting lactation for organizations and employers, a customized breastfeeding curriculum, a community-based lactation supply library, and evaluation tools to assess the impact of our work. This comprehensive program not only addresses the nutritional benefits, but also the social and emotional challenges faced by many parents that embark on the lactation journey in our community. This project integrates research, community programming, and professional expertise to build a foundation for lasting health improvements. Roanoke College’s Center for Community Health Innovation plays a critical role in this effort, offering their expertise in program evaluation and data analysis to ensure the initiative’s success. Their research will help us identify barriers to breastfeeding, particularly in vulnerable populations, and develop strategies to overcome these challenges.

We believe in the power of collaboration, and through The Nourish Network, we are committed to nurturing healthier families and creating a brighter future for our community. Together, we can make a lasting difference.

A trauma-informed lactation support/approach prioritizes the emotional well-being and individual needs of the lactating individual, while aiming to create a safe and empowering environment for them to navigate and own their breastfeeding journey.

What are the Key Points and Core Values of Trauma-Informed Lactation Support

Trauma-informed lactation support/approach refers to a framework or approach that recognizes and addresses the potential impact of trauma on lactation and breastfeeding experiences. It involves understanding that individuals who have experienced trauma may have unique needs and sensitivities that require a compassionate and supportive approach.

The Nourish Network is dedicated to supporting a trauma-informed lactation support/approach, we honor the following core values:

1. Safety

Ensuring that the lactating individual feels physically and emotionally safe during the support process. This involves creating a calm and comfortable environment, using clear and respectful communication, and allowing the individual to have control over their choices and decisions.

2. Trustworthiness

Building trust with the lactating individual by being reliable, honest, and transparent. This includes respecting their boundaries, maintaining confidentiality, and consistently following through on commitments.

3. Empowerment

Recognizing the individual’s strengths and resilience and supporting their autonomy and empowerment in making decisions about their breastfeeding journey. This involves providing information, education, and resources to help them make informed choices that align with their goals and values.

4. Collaboration

Working collaboratively with the lactating individual, their support system, and other healthcare providers to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach to lactation support. This may involve establishing open lines of communication, fostering partnerships, and referring to appropriate professionals when needed.

5. Sensitivity

to trauma triggers: Being aware of and sensitive to potential trauma triggers that may arise during lactation support. This includes being mindful of language and body language, respecting personal boundaries, and adapting support strategies to avoid re-traumatization.

6. Cultural humility

Recognizing and respecting the diversity of individuals’ backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences. A trauma-informed lactation approach acknowledges the importance of cultural humility in providing inclusive and culturally sensitive support.
